I'd like to talk about a fairly small change that has made a surprisingly big difference: about four months ago I stopped riding my motorbike to work and started taking the metro instead. I live in Thủ Đức, on the eastern side of Hồ Chí Minh City, and my office is near Bến Thành Market in the centre. For three years I did that journey on a scooter along the Hà Nội Highway, which meant fifty minutes each way in heat, dust and, from May onwards, sudden rain. The reason I changed was not noble at all. One evening in June I got soaked, my phone died in my pocket, and a truck splashed me from head to toe at a red light. I got home and told my flatmate, 'That's it, I'm done.' She laughed, because I say that every rainy season, but this time I actually bought a monthly pass the next morning. Now I walk ten minutes to the station, sit in an air-conditioned carriage for about twenty-five minutes, and walk another five at the other end. The total time is almost the same. The difference is what I do with it. On the bike my hands and brain were fully occupied with not dying. On the train I've read seven books since June, which is more than in the previous two years put together. How do I feel about it? Mostly pleased, and a bit foolish for not doing it sooner. It isn't perfect: the trains are packed after six, and I miss being able to stop for sugarcane juice on the way home. But I arrive at work dry and in a reasonable mood. I'm keeping the motorbike, though, strictly for weekends.
