Music in public places

It's rarely about entertainment; it's about controlling behaviour. Fast-food chains tend to play quick, loud pop because it nudges people to eat and leave, which frees up tables, while an expensive restaurant chooses slow jazz so that diners linger and order another bottle. Music also covers awkward silence, since a completely quiet shop makes customers feel watched. So what sounds like background noise is usually a deliberate commercial decision. On regulation, I do think limits are justified, mainly for the sake of the people who can't walk away. A customer can leave a noisy café, but a waiter is stuck there for eight hours, and so is the family living above a karaoke bar. In my city, portable speakers on the pavement were a real nuisance until the authorities began fining owners after ten at night. That said, I wouldn't want the rules to be too strict, because street musicians and festival drums are part of what makes a city feel alive; the target should be volume and hours, not music itself. As for listening habits, I expect them to become even more private and more personalised. Headphones are already the default, and streaming services pick the next song before we've thought about it. The cost, I suspect, is that shared musical experience will shrink. My parents' generation all knew the same twenty songs, whereas two classmates today may have no artist in common. Concerts will probably matter more as a result, being one of the few places where people still listen together.
