Fruit and vegetables

Every day, though I can't take much credit for the vegetables. In a Vietnamese family meal there's always a plate of boiled morning glory or a bowl of soup on the table, so it would take real effort to avoid them. Fruit is more hit and miss; I'll eat a whole watermelon in a weekend and then nothing for four days. I usually buy from a woman who sets up her stall at the end of my street around five in the afternoon. She's a bit pricier than the supermarket, but she tells me honestly which mangoes are sour, and you can't put a price on that. When I was little, I was a nightmare about vegetables. I used to pick every bit of bitter melon out of my bowl and hide it under the rice, which fooled absolutely nobody. And yes, growing my own is a small dream of mine. Right now I've got a pot of basil and some chillies on the balcony, and half of them are still alive, so I'd call that a promising start.
