I'd like to talk about a change in the way I get to university, which has given me back at least half an hour every day. I live with my parents in Binh Thanh District in Ho Chi Minh City, and my campus is out in Thu Duc. For two and a half years I rode my motorbike along the main highway out of town. On a good day that took fifty minutes, and on a rainy one well over an hour, most of it spent breathing exhaust behind container trucks. Then, in December 2024, Metro Line 1 finally opened after years of delays. I tried it in the very first week, mainly out of curiosity. My father, who had been hearing about this railway since before I was born, looked at my ticket and said, "So it actually exists?" Now the journey is completely predictable. I walk seven minutes to the station, the train takes about twenty minutes, and a campus shuttle covers the rest. Door to door it's thirty-five minutes at most, and that never changes, whatever the weather. The bigger gain, though, is that the time on board is usable. On a motorbike you can only stare at the number plate in front of you. On the train I go over vocabulary flashcards, answer messages, or simply sit in the air conditioning and wake up properly. As for how I feel about it, relieved is probably the word. I arrive at lectures dry and calm instead of sweaty and irritated. I do miss the freedom of leaving whenever I like, since the trains get crowded at half past seven. Still, I wouldn't go back.
