I'd like to talk about a mechanical keyboard that I'm planning to buy for my friend Quân, whose birthday is at the end of November. Quân and I shared a desk all through secondary school in Nha Trang, and he now works from home as a freelance translator, mostly subtitling Korean dramas into Vietnamese. That means he types for eight or nine hours a day, and he does it on a six-year-old laptop whose letter E has come off. He's stuck a small piece of rubber over the gap. Whenever I point this out he says, 'It still works, why would I spend money on it?' which is exactly why somebody else has to. I've already picked the model. It's a compact one with brown switches, which are supposed to be quiet enough that his wife won't throw it out of the window, and it costs about 1.8 million đồng. I could order it online, but I'd rather go to a little shop near the Polytechnic University in Hồ Chí Minh City next time I'm there, because they let you try the keys before you pay. The main reason I've chosen this is that it's something he needs but would never buy for himself. Quân is generous with other people and incredibly stingy with himself. A second reason is slightly selfish: when I lost my job two years ago, he sent me translation work for three months and refused to take a commission. I've never really found a way to say thank you that he would accept. A keyboard isn't equal to that, obviously, but at least he'll use it every single day, and he'll finally be able to type the letter E without wincing.
