Describe a person who is good at making things by hand

I'd like to talk about my uncle Bay, my mother's older brother, who lives in a small riverside village in Ben Tre and can make almost anything out of wood. By trade he's a rice farmer, but everyone in the area knows him for what he builds in the shed behind his house. Most of it is practical: chairs, cupboards, a bed for each of his three children when they got married. What he really loves making, though, is model boats, the long wooden kind you see on the Mekong, about forty centimetres long with tiny oars and a roof woven from strips of coconut leaf. He never had any formal training. His father was a boat builder, and as a boy he simply stood beside him handing over tools until, at around twelve, he was trusted with a chisel of his own. He still uses that chisel today, and he doesn't own a single power tool apart from a drill. I think what makes him so good is patience rather than talent. A single boat takes him about three weeks of evenings, and if one joint is slightly off he'll take the whole thing apart without complaining. I once asked him why he didn't just use glue, and he looked at me as if I'd insulted the family and said, 'Glue is for people in a hurry.' My own hands are useless; I can barely put together flat-pack shelves. So watching him turn a rough plank into something that delicate feels a bit like watching a magic trick, except that he's happy to show you exactly how it's done.
