I'd like to talk about Cats, the 2019 film version of the famous stage musical, which I can say without hesitation is the worst film I have ever sat through. I watched it about three years ago in my rented room in Can Tho. It was a rainy Saturday night, and my roommate Ngan and I had nothing better to do, so she found it online and said, 'It's a musical with famous actors, how bad can it be?' We found out fairly quickly. As far as I could tell, the story is about a group of street cats in London who gather for one night to decide which of them will be chosen to start a new life. I say 'as far as I could tell' because almost nothing actually happens. One cat after another simply turns up, sings a song introducing itself, and steps aside for the next one, for nearly two hours. My main problem, though, was how it looked. The actors were covered in digital fur but still had human faces and hands, and the effect was deeply unsettling rather than cute. I also never cared about any of the characters, so even the one famous sad song left me cold. Ngan fell asleep after forty minutes, and I only stayed awake out of stubbornness. To be fair, the performers can clearly sing and dance, and I've heard the show is wonderful on stage. But as a film it felt like a very expensive mistake. The only good thing to come out of that evening is that 'worse than Cats' has become our standard measure for every bad film since.
