I'd like to talk about a surprise party I organised last May for Ms Hoa, who taught my class literature for three years at a high school in Vinh. She was retiring after thirty-four years, and I wanted something more personal than the official ceremony. I started about six weeks ahead by creating a Zalo group and tracking down my old classmates. That was the hardest part, because we graduated eight years ago and people had moved everywhere. In the end thirty-two out of forty-five said yes. Everyone chipped in 150,000 dong, and I split the work up: one friend ordered the cake, another collected old photos for a slideshow, and I persuaded the caretaker to lend us our old classroom on a Sunday morning. The trickiest bit was getting her there without giving the game away, so her daughter told her the school needed some papers signed. When she opened the door, we were all sitting at our old desks, and the class joker stood up and asked whether there was any homework. She looked at him over her glasses and said, "You still can't sit still, can you?" Then she burst into tears, and so did half the room. I'd say it was a success because of the small details rather than the budget. Each of us had written a short letter about one lesson we remembered, and we bound them into a book for her. She read a few aloud and corrected one boy's spelling, which got the biggest laugh of the day. I was exhausted afterwards, but really proud. I'm usually the one who turns up to things, not the one who makes them happen.
