I'd like to talk about the gym I go to in Go Vap district in Saigon, which is a perfectly good gym in every respect except for what comes out of its speakers. I joined about eight months ago because it's a five-minute ride from my rented room and the membership is only three hundred thousand dong a month. I go four evenings a week, usually around seven, which unfortunately is when the music is at its worst. They play what we call vinahouse, which is basically old Vietnamese love songs speeded up and laid over a thumping electronic beat. Imagine a sad ballad about a broken heart, sung at double speed, with a bass line that makes the mirrors shake. On top of that, the playlist seems to contain about fifteen tracks, so I've heard each one several hundred times by now. I dislike it for a few reasons. It's simply too loud; I can't hear my own headphones over it, even at full volume. It's also oddly stressful. I go there to clear my head after eight hours of answering customer emails, and instead I leave with my ears ringing. I did once ask the young man at the front desk whether he could turn it down a little, and he grinned and said, 'Sorry, the boss says no beat, no muscle.' To be fair, the bodybuilders in the corner seem to love it, so I accept that I'm in the minority. I've thought about switching gyms, but the next nearest one costs twice as much, so for now I just wear earplugs under my headphones and suffer in silence, so to speak.
