I'd like to talk about the morning I tried to register for my final-semester courses at university in Huế, which was the most stressful fight I've ever had with a website. At my university you sign up for classes through an online portal that opens at exactly eight o'clock, and places are first come, first served. That semester I needed one particular class, Research Methods, to graduate on time, and it had only sixty seats for around four hundred students. So at 7.55 I was sitting in an internet café near Đông Ba Market, because the wifi in my dormitory was hopeless. The moment the portal opened, it crashed. I got a white screen, then an error in English that just said 'Service unavailable'. I refreshed, logged in again, and got thrown out. This went on for about forty minutes. What I did, in the end, was partly clever and partly desperate. A classmate messaged our group saying, 'Try the mobile site, it uses a different server.' I opened it on my phone using 4G, kept the computer as a backup, and typed in the course code directly instead of searching through the menu. It went through on the third attempt, at 8.47. I took a screenshot immediately, as proof. Afterwards I emailed the academic office to confirm it, since I didn't trust the system at all by then. How did I feel? During it, slightly sick; my hands were actually shaking. Afterwards, relieved and rather annoyed, because the whole thing was avoidable. The lesson I took was unglamorous: always have a second device and a second connection ready. I've done that for every online deadline since, including booking the IELTS test itself.
