I'd like to talk about Linh, who has been my roommate in a university dormitory in Hanoi for the past two years and is easily the most organised person I've ever lived with. Four of us share about twenty square metres, and within a week it was obvious that she ran on a different system. To give you an idea, her online calendar is colour-coded: blue for lectures, green for her part-time tutoring job, orange for the gym. Every Sunday evening she plans the whole week, right down to which day she'll wash her hair. Her side of the wardrobe has labelled boxes, and she books her bus ticket home to Thanh Hoa for Tet a full two months in advance. Her motto, which she delivers with a completely straight face, is "If it's not in the calendar, it doesn't exist." At first I found all this a bit over the top, to be honest. But then exam season arrived. While I was pulling all-nighters and living on instant noodles, she was asleep by eleven, because she had spread her revision over five weeks. She ended up with a scholarship, and I ended up with dark circles. I think she's like this because of how she grew up. Her parents run a small grocery shop, and she kept the accounts for them from the age of thirteen, so keeping track of things is second nature to her. What I admire most is that she isn't rigid about it. If a friend needs her, she simply drags the coloured block to another day. I've started copying her, although so far my calendar has only one colour.
