Handmade goods and traditional crafts

A factory product is usually more consistent and often cheaper, so the appeal of handmade things clearly isn't practical. I think people are buying a story. A ceramic bowl with a slightly uneven rim tells you that a particular person shaped it on a particular afternoon, and that makes it feel worth keeping in a way a flawless one from a production line never does. It's also a quiet protest against throwaway culture: you repair a hand-stitched leather bag, whereas you simply replace a plastic one. As for schools, I'd strongly support teaching children to make things, and not because we need more carpenters. Sewing a button or building a small wooden shelf teaches patience and the habit of fixing mistakes rather than deleting them, which screen-based lessons rarely do. That said, it shouldn't become another graded subject with exams, or the pleasure would be squeezed out of it. Will traditional crafts die out? Some certainly will, because young people in craft villages can earn more in a factory than at their parents' loom, and you can't blame them. But I don't expect a total disappearance. The crafts that survive will be the ones that move upmarket, selling fewer pieces at higher prices to customers who want something with a name behind it, and online shops now let a single weaver in a remote province reach buyers on the other side of the world.
