Homes and housing choices

It depends heavily on where you are. In the big cities the typical home used to be a tall, narrow house squeezed onto a tiny plot, with a shop or a parked motorbike on the ground floor, but for young families the default is now a flat in a tower block because that's all they can afford. In rural areas people still build detached houses with a yard, often far larger than they need, since a big house is a sign that the family has done well. As for the pull of the countryside, I think the attraction is space and pace. You get clean air, a garden, and neighbours who notice if your gate stays shut for two days. The trade-off is everything else: decent hospitals, good schools and well-paid jobs are concentrated in cities, which is why so many people praise village life and then stay exactly where they are. That said, remote work has started to shift this, and I know a couple of designers who moved to a hill town and kept their city salaries. Looking ahead, I expect homes to get smaller but cleverer. With land prices climbing, architects will rely on folding furniture and rooms that serve two purposes, and rooftop solar panels will probably become standard. I'd also guess more people will rent for life, which means owning a house may stop being the main measure of adult success.
