Medical careers and healthcare work

I think the motives are mixed. Some young people are genuinely drawn to the idea of relieving suffering, but in many Asian families medicine is also the safest badge of success a child can earn: it's respected, it's stable, and parents can mention it proudly at every gathering. I'd guess that for a fair number of applicants the family's ambition comes first and the vocation arrives later, if at all. On pay, I'd separate the two groups. Senior specialists in private hospitals do very well, whereas nurses and junior doctors in public hospitals are plainly underpaid given the night shifts, the emotional strain and the years of training behind them. When a nurse earns less than a ride-hailing driver, it's hardly surprising that so many leave for clinics abroad. That said, money alone wouldn't fix things; overcrowded wards and aggressive relatives drive people out just as much as the salary does. As for the future, I expect technology to take over the routine parts of the job rather than the job itself. Software is already reading X-rays and flagging tumours a tired human eye might miss, and remote consultations save rural patients a day's travel. What a machine can't do is sit with a frightened family and explain bad news gently, so I suspect bedside manner will become the scarce skill rather than the afterthought it is in training today.
