Popularity, fame and influence

At school it's usually the ones who are funny or good at sport, not necessarily the top students. In a workplace the pattern shifts: the popular colleague tends to be the person who is reliable and generous with help, who'll explain the spreadsheet for the third time without sighing. In both settings, people who listen well are liked far more than people who talk well. Social media works by different rules, and speed is one of them. Someone can go from unknown to a million followers in a week because the algorithm rewards whatever gets an instant reaction, whether that's a catchy dance, a shocking opinion or simply a relatable complaint about traffic. Timing and luck play a much larger part than talent. To be fair, a few do earn it; a street food vendor who posts honest, good-humoured videos for two years has built that audience through sheer consistency. But quick fame tends to be shallow, and the same crowd that lifts someone up will turn on them over one careless remark. Is popularity more important now than before? I think it has become more measurable, which makes it feel more important. My parents' generation had a reputation in their neighbourhood; mine has a follower count that employers and even strangers can look up. For some careers, such as sales or the arts, that number carries real weight. For most of us, though, I'd argue being trusted by twenty people still matters more than being recognised by twenty thousand.
